MEZZOTINTS

In my 40th year, with Jean, our four kids, several hundred students and crew, I circumnavigated the world by ship when I taught in the Semester at Sea program. It was a life altering experience for each of us. Overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of art we saw, when we returned to Boulder I decided to exclusively follow for a time a small-scale mezzotint printmaking process I had experimented with off and on for years. For the next five years I worked on a series of 4"x4" copper plates finally completing over 140 of them. In spite of their size, and I think because of their directness, intimacy and tactile mystery, the works sold well and brought me a surprising and gratifying amount of recognition. I also include here an article from Artspace Magazine by Susanne Singleterry which I liked.
